El Salvador Nature and Culture

DAY 1: WELCOME TO EL SALVADOR Reception at the international airport and transfer to the hotel of your choice.

DAY 2: CITY TOUR AND MUSEUMS.

Breakfast. Departure from hotel. We will go to the  historical centre of San Salvador, visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral, in whose crypt are burried  the remains  of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo  Romero. Then we will go to see a relief map of  El Salvador, located in the  Military History Museum,  in the El Zapote barracks. Later we will go towards the La Puerta del Diablo (the Devil´s Gate), a rocky formation with an interesting panoramic view. We will visit La Plaza de las Américas where the monument to the patron saint of El Salvador is located, and then we will go to the National Handicraftsl Market. Later we will go to the volcano of San Salvador. Lunch. In the afternoon we will visit museums, the first destination being  the National Museum of Antropology, located close to the Zona Rosa. We will be able to appreciate a valuable collection of pieces of the Preclassic Age (1500 B.C. - 250 A.C.) as well as relics of the colonial time. Later we will move to the MARTE Museum, one of the main centres of art in the country, on whose walls works of recognized  great artists  like Siqueiros, Picasso, Dali, Cartier - Bresson and the most  important Salvadorans have been exhibited. We will continue to the art galleries, the Pinacoteca being our first stop. The Blue and White gallery maintains a monthly exhibition by various artists.
 At the end of the afternoon transfer to the hotel.

DAY 3: VOLCANOES COMPLEAX AND  COATEPEQUE LAKE.
Breakfast. Departure from hotel.  For persons who love nature we offer the Cerro Verde National Park located at a height of 2035 metres above sea level. We will follow footpaths around the crater of the Cerro Verde volcano, with beautiful panoramic views of the Ilamatepeque volcano and Izalco volcano which was also known by sailors as the lighthouse of the Pacific, because in the past its eruptions guided vessels to the Salvadoran coast.  Later we will go to the Lake of Coatepeque, going for a boat trip on its calm waters, and at the end of our route we will have lunch in a restaurant in the area. At the end of afternoon return to hotel in San Salvador.

DAY 4:  MAYAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOUR.
Breakfast. Departure from hotel. We will go to the Joya de Cerén, an indigenous Mayan village, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. Then  we will travel to  San Andrés Archaeological Site , a pre-Columbian ceremonial centre where we will be able to appreciate several  semi-uncovered structures  (pyramids) and visit the  museum  where we will discover  the  Mayan legacy in pottery and wood  artefacts  as well as an explanation of how its people lived. We will continue our route towards the city of Santa Ana, to visit its historical centre, where we will be able to appreciate the gothic style Cathedral   and later we will visit the National Palace and the Theater. We will then have lunch in a pleasant restaurant in the city. Later we will go to Chalchuapa, to visit the archaeological sites of Tazumal and Casa Blanca  where we will see the largest indigenous pyramid  discovered in El Salvador. At the end of afternoon we will return to the hotel in San Salvador.

DAY 5: EL IMPOSSIBLE FOREST RESERVE
Breakfast. Departure to  El Imposible  Forest Reserve. Within the biosphere reserve of Apaneca  - Lamatepec is the El Imposible National Park, the largest protected natural area with 3.800 hectares to explore, and great  biological diversity with more than 1.000 species of plants and trees of El Salvador. This tour begins  in the  visitors center  of Mixtepe where we will receive a small introduction about  this incredible tropical forest. We will follow a route along  footpaths with information boards, going deep  inside the forest where we will see some  stone-carvings  like the Sealed Stone, which consists of a rock carved with more than 100 elements that include domes, butterflies and concentric circles and which is located in the canyon  of the Guayaba River.  We will also visit the site known as Los Enganches, an excellent place to refresh oneself in crystalline waters. We will take our lunch inside  the park.  At the end of afternoon return to San Salvador and hotel.

DAY 6: San Salvador
Breakfast and transfer to the airport. End of services
